When the first Pond Hockey Classic was held in 2010, there was no guarantee it would work.
It was a new outdoor hockey tournament in New England, built around natural ice and a simple idea: bring hockey back to the basics.
The teams that signed up that first year took a chance on us.
So when it came time to open registration for the following season, we wanted to give those teams something in return.
That was the beginning of Returning Team Pre-Registration.
A Thank You That Became a Tradition
What started as a simple way to thank the teams that believed in the event has grown into one of the most valuable benefits of being a returning Pond Hockey Classic team.
Each September, teams that participated the previous season receive an exclusive opportunity to secure their spot before registration opens to the public.
For tournaments that have historically sold out, that early access matters.
Returning teams do not have to compete with the full public registration pool on opening day. Instead, they are given a dedicated window to lock in their place for another winter on the ice.
It is our way of recognizing the teams that continue to come back year after year and have helped build Pond Hockey Classic into what it is today.
How Pre-Registration Works
Returning Team Pre-Registration is a one-for-one opportunity.
That means a team may pre-register for one team entry in the same Pond Hockey Classic tournament it competed in the previous season.
For example, a team that played in the New England Pond Hockey Classic in 2026 may use its returning-team access to register one team for the 2027 New England Pond Hockey Classic.
During the pre-registration window, teams may not:
-
Register additional team entries
-
Use one returning-team spot to register multiple teams
-
Transfer their returning-team access to another tournament
-
Switch from one Pond Hockey Classic event to another
If a returning team wants to enter an additional team or compete in a different tournament, it may do so once registration opens to the public, subject to availability.
Why We Keep It One-for-One
The purpose of pre-registration has always been to reward returning participation, not simply provide early access to inventory.
Keeping the program one-for-one allows us to protect that original intent.
A team that supported a particular event earns the opportunity to return to that event the following season.
It also helps us balance two things that are important to Pond Hockey Classic: rewarding the teams that have helped build our events while still creating opportunities for new teams to join the community.
2027 Returning Team Registration
For the 2027 season, Returning Team Pre-Registration opens September 1 and runs through September 30.
Team Captains will receive an email with their registration link and instructions when the window opens.
Any remaining team spots will become available to the public beginning October 1 at 12:00 PM ET.
If your team competed with us in 2026 and plans to return in 2027, September is your opportunity to secure your place before the rest of the hockey world gets its shot.
What began in 2010 as a thank you to a handful of teams has become a Pond Hockey Classic tradition.
And we think that is exactly how it should be.
